COMM 337- Terkel

Listening to Terkel's comments about storytelling and journalism can be helpful to my writing techniques because he talks about objective and non- objective writing. He discusses how valuable non- objective writing is because it is a story that is not taking a side, but is presenting the cold hard facts of a story. Terkel also mentions someone named Andre which in my opinion would be self-conscience.

I learned that I could think about what I want to write about using facts that are 100% true to avoid a subpoena. Also, I can write my opinion about a topic or I can write true information about a story, but no taking sides on an issue.

Analysis Paper 4- Missing in Action

In ESPN Magazine, the article Missing in Action which was written by Seth Wickersham, David Fleming, and Eddie Matz was published on October 20, 2008. This article is about defensive players who discuss how they have had a hard time tackling some of the best players in the NFL. Also, the article has seven reasons that describe how difficult it is for defensive players to tackle.
First, the article mentions some of the best offensive players in the NFL such as Brandon Jacobs, Brandon Marshall, Reggie Bush, etc. The three writers also made a list of the top three players in the NFL that are the best and the worst players as well as the toughest and fastest players in the league. The three writers made five lists that only refer to the top defensive players while the last three refer to the top offensive players. Some of the players that are on the top lists of the defense include Rodney Harrison of the New England Patriots, Boss Bailey of the Denver Broncos, Roy Williams of the Dallas Cowboys, etc. As for the top offensive players that are on the list, they include Marion Barber and Terrell Owens of the Dallas Cowboys, Jeremy Shockey of the New Orleans Saints, etc. The writers listed these individuals because they have had a big impact on the NFL, and they put some fear into both offensive and defensive players around the league. Therefore, this list supports the writers’ article since the NFL has become a popular sport in America.
The second thing that the three writers use to illustrate the title of the article is that they came up with seven reasons why defenders can’t stop offensive players. The reasons are explained in detail about certain players, and they have a few quotes from the defensive players who responded to the reasons based on how they would tackle a player and what they could do to improve their game. For example, the writers used Brandon Marshall as an example to explain the first reason, mobility, because Marshall has the ability to get around defenders and catch the football through the center of the defense without any defenders near him to make a tackle. Also, the writers use the West Coast offense as one of the reasons because this offense is designed for quick plays that will cause the defense to be off- balance and react at a slower pace than normal. Therefore, the West Coast offense can make defenders miss tackles.
Another thing the writers used to explain the title of the article was the problem of not practicing as a pro athlete. Basically, the writers asked defensive players what would happen if they did not practice everyday to prepare for a game. For example, the writers asked Colts’ defensive tackle, Dwight Freeney why it is important to practice on how to tackle a player. Freeney simply told them that if they did not learn how to tackle a player, then they would not perform to the best of their abilities and would miss a clean tackle during a game. The writers also include Mother Nature as reason why defenders can’t stop players. The writers illustrated this by referring to the 2007 NFC Championship at Green Bay when the temperature was below zero degrees and the football field itself was like a giant block of ice. Both the Giants and the Packers had a difficult time moving the football down the field, and they had trouble tackling players due to the extreme cold. Basically, this example shows why it is difficult for defenders to tackle. Therefore, Mother Nature can have a negative impact on the game for both teams because of the brutal temperatures and their inability to adjust to the harsh conditions.
The final reason that the writers use to show why it is difficult for defenders to tackle is that the NFL’s policies are constantly changing year after year. The writers use a timeline that shows a list of rules that are applied to the defenders which gives them a disadvantage. For example, the rule about horse-collar tackling came into effect in 2005 because too many athletes have had neck injuries that paralyze players for life. Therefore, this rule has a big impact on defenders because they can’t tackle a player by grabbing him by the back of his pads.
Finally, the writers asked players how they try to tackle a player. Some of the responses have been interesting because each defender gave an answer about his own method on how to tackle. For example, Texans linebacker, DeMeco Ryans said that, “In today’s game, you’re almost never in the position to make the clean-form tackle you’re taught in drills” (ESPN 47). Ryans then gave the writers some valuable information for defenders on how to tackle. The three important guidelines that Ryans uses every game are anticipation, roll with the play, and always have a plan for your hands. Basically, these guidelines are what help improve Ryans’ tackling which will make him a better player. Therefore, these reasons support the title of the article and add credibility for all three writers.
In this writer’s opinion, the article is well presented and well written for a few reasons. One reason is that the seven reasons illustrate how defenders have a difficult task just to make a tackle, avoid getting penalized, and learning to adjust to different weather conditions. In other words, defenders must make a lot of adjustments and improvements so that they won’t be humiliated for missing a tackle.
Another reason why this article is well written is that the writers use recognizable players that sports writers and fans know simply by how they play the game of football. Basically, the writers came up with a list of the best offensive and defensive players in the NFL and what they do during a football game. Therefore, using key players allows the reader to know what position they play and for what team they play.
The final reason why this writer believes that the article is well- presented is that the writers use images of players. The images show a defender trying to tackle a player forcing that player to lose the football. Basically, the defender is trying to strip the football out of the player’s hands. Therefore, the images can make readers look at the players and possibly take interest in reading the article.
After reading this article, this writer thinks that Wickersham, Fleming, and Matz did an excellent job writing a story about current NFL players and what skills they bring to the football field. Therefore, this article could teach young football players how to make a clean tackle and not be “missing in action.”

COMM 337- Waiting for Schadenfreude

1. I think the sentence, "It was, rather, about a sense that the wrong people had inherited the earth," is the 'line' for this story.

2. The source of conflict Judith Warner refers to is about the Gilded Age where low to middle class people are not being treated well and are classified as losers.

3. There weren't any real surprises to me because Warner describes that the financial crisis is the "Root of all Evil" for the economy. She also describes how the bosses of corporations make all the money while the employees make little money even for their efforts to improve the Market.

Analysis Paper 3- Brady hits snag

The article, Brady’s Recovery Hits Snag was written by Shira Springer and published in The Boston Globe on October 24, 2008. Springer discusses New England Patriots’ quarterback, Tom Brady and his knee injury that occurred on the opening week of the 2008 NFL season. She also describes how Brady’s knee is infected and what the doctors are doing to treat his injury so that he will be able to make a full recovery and possibly play next season. This story Springer wrote is a feature story for the newspaper.
First, Springer describes how Brady is handling the injury by stating that he went through a second procedure on October 15 and is being treated with a six- week course of IV antibiotics. She also stated that Brady’s recovery process is not compromised by the infection in his knee because the doctors are cleaning the wound properly and hope that Brady will make a full recovery and return to playing football. Therefore, Springer states that Brady is being taken care of by his personal doctors and the Patriots’ medical staff is supporting Brady’s decision on choosing a personal doctor.
Springer then discusses how the infection could have long term problems by damaging Brady’s knee even further. She explains that the doctors are trying the find the bacteria that infected Brady’s knee, but their best hypothesis for the bacteria would be staph which the doctors state is the most common cause in the septic joint infecting the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL). Springer then mentions the possible problems that the infection can cause which include long-term knee problems, a decrease in mobility, stiffness, weakness, and lingering pain. These effects can possibly harm Brady because if the infection grows too large; he could possibly never regain full motion on the knee that would force him to retire from the NFL. Therefore, Springer’s description about the infection in Brady’s knee suggests that the infection could cause serious problems for him and his career.
Another thing Springer describes about the knee injury is how doctors progress in a normal surgery. She explains that the doctors handle both ACL and MCL injuries by trying to fix the MCL injury or by letting the MCL injury heal naturally. The next step after the MCL is repaired is to fix the ACL injury and the patient will heal in a certain amount of time. The doctors told Springer that a normal knee surgery takes several months to repair, and that the patient should be able to make a full recovery and continue with his or her career. Therefore, Springer’s description about a knee operation clearly shows what doctors have to do in order for the patient to have a full recovery.
Finally, Springer describes how Brady’s knee got injured and what joints are suffering the infection. Brady injured his knee when a defensive tackle of the Kansas City Chiefs hit Brady’s knee with his shoulder pad and Brady was feeling extreme pain. Brady injured his MCL and ACL ending his season with the Patriots. Doctors stated that the septic joints could possibly be infected; therefore, the doctors had to wash out Brady’s knee two to three times so that the risk of infection would not become a major concern during the surgery. Also, Springer illustrates that the infection in Brady’s knee is a fairly common treatment for the doctors to handle. Therefore, Springer states that the doctors will be able to clean Brady’s knee and wash out the infection so as to continue the surgery which will take several months.
In this writer’s opinion, Springer did a good job reporting this feature story about Tom Brady for a few reasons. The first reason is that Springer did a good job describing how doctors handle a knee surgery by cleaning the knee for any infection and then starting on the surgery. Basically, describing the ACL and MCL and which joint is normally infected supports Springer’s thesis about a knee surgery and how doctors use the proper treatment to repair the knee so that athletes like Brady can make a full recovery from the injury.
Another reason why this writer thinks that Springer did a good job writing this feature story is that Springer explained how long the procedure would take for Brady’s knee to completely heal. She illustrates by explaining the length of time the doctors predicted for Brady’s knee to be completely repaired so that he will be ready for the 2009 NFL season. Basically, Springer stated that the knee injury will keep Brady off the field for the rest of the 2008 season. Therefore, Springer explained with details on how long the recovery will take and she used direct quotes from the doctors who explained the process of the surgery and how they will be able to treat Brady’s knee with good care.
Finally, this writer thinks that Springer wrote well because it covers one of the most valuable players in the NFL. Basically, this story covered one of the best players in the league, and Springer, like many other NFL fans, hopes that Brady will make a full recovery and be able to play football again for the New England Patriots. Also, this writer thinks that Springer wrote about a player that has had a huge impact not only on fans, but coaches and players of the league as well. In other words, with the loss of Brady, teams will have a better chance of winning against the Patriots, but they also hope that Brady will get his knee repaired and will be able to play next season so that players and coaches will have a challenge provided by one of the best players in the NFL. Therefore, Springer emphasizes that Tom Brady is one of the best players in the NFL and she made sure that her story will give complete coverage on how Brady’s surgery is progressing.
After reading this article, this writer thinks Springer made a good feature story for the newspaper and for sports fans that follow football. Therefore, this article has a big impact not only on sports fans, but also the players who have sustained a serious injury and will be missing an entire season.

Analysis Paper 2- The Fall of America Inc.

The article, The Fall of America, Inc. was written by Francis Fukuyama and published on October 13, 2008. Fukuyama gave his opinion mainly on the current state of the U.S. economy. In his opinion, the economy is in bad shape by relating to the history of the U.S. and how the next U.S. president will handle the situation for the future of the country. Therefore, Fukuyama wrote this piece as an opinion on bad decisions for the U.S. economy.
In his article, he refers to U.S. history on how the economy was in bad shape during the Reagan administration. He describes how Reagan was trying to create a capitalism that would bring about low taxes, light regulation, and a government that would be in charge of the economic growth of the U.S. However, Fukuyama states that Reagan’s plan backfired which created deregulation that had a huge affect not only on the U.S., but the world. Fukuyama also uses the term “Reaganism” that describes how governments can expand their authority. Also, this term was used to describe how Reagan tried to make tax cuts so that the government and wealthy people would be receiving the money while everyone else struggles to maintain a balanced budget.
Fukuyama also describes how President Bush messed up the economy by stating that between 2002 and 2007, the countries Europe and Latin America viewed the U.S. economy as a, “cowboy capitalism.” In other words, Fukuyama is blaming President Bush for creating havoc in the Middle East by invading Iraq and raising the prices of oil and gasoline so that he could use American dollars to fund his war. Therefore, Fukuyama is stating that the Bush administration put the U.S. economy far more in debt with the funding of the war in Iraq. Money was printed and sent to the Middle East instead of being used to stabilize and support the US economy.
Fukuyama then starts talking about the future of the U.S. economy with the upcoming presidential election between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain. He states that Obama wants to make better political relations with the countries of Russia and China by way of diplomacy. Obama believes that if the U.S. pulls its troops out of Iraq and focuses on bringing the gasoline and oil prices down, then the economy will recover from severe debts, but not all at once.
However, Fukuyama states that McCain is like Teddy Roosevelt because the last few debates, McCain has been saying that if the U.S. leaves Iraq, it will be a failure. Fukuyama also stated that McCain has been calling out against the Wall Street and SEC chairman, Chris Cox because Wall Street received a 700 billion dollar bailout to avoid a bankruptcy and possibly another depression. Therefore, Fukuyama is criticizing both candidates because Obama’s policy is not considered an ideological process and McCain’s policy is not considered intelligent, but trigger happy.
Finally, Fukuyama states that in order for the U.S. economy to change, the country must live under a democracy. Fukuyama believes that a republic is a bad way of governing a country because President Bush wasted billions of U.S. dollars on Iraq and has done nothing to help the economy. In other words, Fukuyama illustrates that Bush did nothing to help his own people, but he certainly had time to spend a lot of money for his war in the Middle East. Also, Fukuyama related how the Bush administration is similar to the Nixon and Reagan administrations by explaining how each president handled the economy by trying to cut taxes which took a lot of jobs away from the citizens living in the U.S. In return, foreign countries, such Russia and China are noticing that Bush is really destroying not only the U.S. economy, but the world economy as well because almost every country relies on the U.S. dollar.
In this writer’s opinion, Fukuyama is one hundred percent accurate about the U.S. economy being in very bad shape. One reason why this writer thinks that Fukuyama is right about the U.S. economy being in bad shape is that he read in the article about the 700 billion dollar tab to help Wall Street avoid a stock market crash. In other words, this writer thinks that Fukuyama did a good job explaining how the 700 billion dollars can put the U.S. in greater debt, but also make it a challenge for the person who becomes president.
Second, this writer thinks that Fukuyama did a good job comparing both the Nixon and Bush administrations based on foreign policy because Fukuyama illustrates how both Republicans were focusing on handling both the Vietnam War and the War in Iraq. Basically, both men were more focused on how to spend money for Iraq and Vietnam, but also how many troops should be deployed to war. Therefore, Fukuyama has a very strong point about both presidents ruining the U.S. with their foreign policy overshadowing the economy.
Finally, this writer thinks that Fukuyama is right about the Republicans ruining the U.S. economy whenever a Republican is President of the United States. He explains how Reagan, Nixon, and Bush ruined the economy by asking for billions of dollars to help each of their egocentric foreign policies. In other words, each president did not care about the economy because each of them erroneously thought that the U.S. economy was in great shape.
Based off this third reason, Fukuyama thinks that living under a republic is worse than living under a democracy. For example, Fukuyama illustrates that President Bush uses the term democracy as a military action against countries that are ruled under tyranny. Basically, President Bush uses democracy as an excuse just to start a war in the Middle East. Therefore, these three reasons illustrate why this writer thinks that Fukuyama is one hundred percent accurate about the U.S. economy being in bad shape.
After reading and analyzing this article, Fukuyama clearly states that the U.S. economy is in terrible shape due to previous U.S. history and the current administration funding the War in Iraq. Therefore, the next U.S. president must focus on rebuilding the economy to help every American live in a country of peace and prosperity.

COMM 337- Mark Danner review

I am in class today.

Mark Danner's article is well written because it is discussing the 2008 election from the beginning that makes it a feature story. I think he does a good job comparing McCain to Bush because McCain has the same foreign policies as President Bush while Obama is focused on the economy. Also, Danner does a good job of using words that replaces profanity. I think people should not hear profanity because it gives a bad image to society. Therefore, this article illustrates how both candidates plan to run the U.S. with their policies.

Analysis Paper 1- The Politics of Water

The Milwaukee Magazine published a political article titled the “Politics of Water” on March 3, 2008. Barbara Miner, the author of this article, reviewed the Great Lakes in the Midwest of the United States by explaining a little history about the lakes, illustrating a disaster scenario, and mentioning how the lakes can shape the future of the United States and the world. Therefore, this article is a chronological piece that describes the past and the present.
Miner started the article by describing some U.S. history of the Great Lakes dating back to the late 1800s. She describes how Waukesha which is also called Spring City played a huge role with the Great Lakes because it has sweet- tasting spring water that many tourists all over the nation would come to taste and drink it. Basically, Miner is describing how this city is a tourist attraction just because of the spring water.
Another part of the history Miner used was the year 1965, which is the year when the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers studied the water of the Great Lakes to relieve droughts in the Northeast. In 1981, the U.S. government paid 2.2 billion dollars for a pipeline from Wyoming to the Great Lakes designed to carry coal slurry. These two dates show how the U.S. government is trying to preserve fresh water for the future.
Miner illustrates a disaster scenario of the Great Lakes by using the Aral Sea as an example. The Aral Sea is part of Russia which has been polluted for many years and over that time, the seas began to drought. The reason Miner used the Aral Sea as an example of the Great Lakes is that it used to be the fourth largest lake in the world.
She also discussed global warming as a disaster scenario because it is changing the world’s climate rapidly. With global warming rising at an alarming rate, the salt waters will expand because the glaciers are absorbing and holding the fresh water hostage which is a valuable resource for the United States and the world. Therefore, Miner shows how global warming can have a bad affect on the Great Lakes.
Finally, Barbara Miner goes into detail about the Great Lakes and discusses methods that can be used to shape the future of the United States. She explains how important the lakes are because they provide a fresh water supply for the Midwest and they are part of a tourist attraction. Miner explains that the fresh water supply shapes the economy of the Midwest in the U.S. by being a useful resource for farmers to plant the crops such as corn and soy beans. It also allows tourists to explore the different sites by boat and travel to different states by going across the lakes instead of taking an airplane or driving long miles across state borders. These examples show how Miner is illustrating the importance of the lakes in the United States.
Also, Miner illustrates how the Great Lakes are being referred to as a resource for the nation. She states that the water of the Great Lakes will be the new oil in the future, and she gained this information from water experts who stated this as a prediction. A method Miner would probably use would be where car dealerships are switching from gasoline and oil to water. Basically, dealerships can provide cars and trucks that get better mileages without the use of oil and gas as a necessity which will put oil and gas companies possibly out of business. Therefore, oil and gasoline will become obsolete in the future when humans will figure out how to run cars on water.
Another thing that Miner discusses about the Great Lakes that can shape the future of the United States is that the U.S. government is trying to establish a long term water supply by 2010. In other words, the government is trying to maintain a consistent water supply for every person in the United States by trying to prevent droughts from occurring in the Midwest and in the Gulf Coast. Also, the government is trying to bring global warming to a halt by trying to quarantine pollution from factories. Miner illustrates how Congress is trying to establish some new federal laws that will regulate the water of the Great Lakes because the lakes are starting to lack amounts of fresh water for the people due to drought and global warming. Therefore, this information she used illustrates how the Great Lakes are being regulated by the U.S. government.
Ms. Miner states that Waukesha is the villain of the Great Lakes for two reasons. One reason is that the city of Waukesha has hotels for travelers that can find a place to stay for a couple of days or weeks which allows the people to tour the city rather than the Great Lakes. Basically, Miner is saying that the city is becoming a tourist attraction which is taking a lot of water supply from the lakes. This reason shows how Waukesha is affecting the Great Lakes.
The final reason why Waukesha is a villain to the Great Lakes is that the city has major sites for tourists to visit. These sites are making tourists stay in Waukesha longer than normal because they are taking a huge amount of water supply from the lakes for the city’s water parks, restaurants, and buffets. Basically, entertainment parks and food businesses are using large amounts of fresh water to make tourists feel welcomed to the city and providing good water for hungry people. Therefore, the city is a huge tourist attraction that uses a lot of fresh water from the Great Lakes that some people would state that the city is a villain to the lakes.
This writer thinks that Miner’s writing is well written for a few reasons. One reason is that she explained the history of the Great Lakes and how they affected the United States. Another reason is that the use of fresh water not only has a national effect, but an international effect that can put oil companies out of business by using water as a resource for an alternative fuel for vehicles. The final reason is that Miner uses suggested solutions for the Great Lakes to prevent droughts in the near future. These reasons show why this writer understands why Miner did a chronological piece to make a report for a magazine.
Therefore, this article is presented in a timeline so that Miner could explain to readers how the Great Lakes have a big affect on the United States and how they are important to people and the future because of the fresh water the lakes provide.

COMM 337- Georgia Bulldogs bumped to No. 3

Chip Towers reported that in college football, the Georgia Bulldogs who were ranked number one at the beginning of the regular season are now ranked at number three with USC at number one and Oklahoma at number two. The way Towers reported the story was that he spoke to the head coach of the Bulldogs, Mark Richt along with Ralph Russo who is a college football writer for The Associated Press. He asked simple questions that Richt could answer and Richt simply told him that Bulldog fans should not be worried because the team still has many games left in the regular season in which they could jump back into first place.

Russo provided Towers with examples about other teams that were ranked number one, but then dropped to number three. Russo also told Towers that there is plenty of time for the fans to vote for the Bulldogs to be number one at the end of the regular season.

COMM 337- Obama and McCain Speeches

After reading both speeches, Obama's speech was better than McCain's because Milbank used important examples that referred to human history. For example, Milbank included how Obama referred to the Legend of Troy as well as Greek Mythology. Also, Obama's speech had a lot on how he was going to develop a health care plan and pull U.S. troops out of Iraq.

On the other hand, McCain's speech didn't not sound trustworthy because the writer of the article made McCain's image as a "cowboy." Basically, the writer only included material that would fit McCain's background. Therefore, Obama's campaign speech had a greater positive outcome than McCain's speech.

COMM 337 Discussion Questions- Answers

1. Reporters come across something unexpected in a story (Murray); I think it is something that happens without any suspicion.

2. It reveals a new plot to a storyline or it could be additional information that provides more detail to a story.

3. The relationship between reporting and writing is that they both involve a story which is written into words, uses many facts, and described by many perspectives.

4. You look for what isn't at an event as much as what is at an event.

5. Murray means that craft is a special skill for a person. I think craft can be a special skill, but also a special kit for what job a person has skills at. The difference between craft and art is that craft is a skill and art is human creativity.

6. The relationship between craft reporting and writing is that reporting has the five w's and gives a distinct story. As for craft writing, it makes the writer write important information, facts, and details of the event.

Procedure on how to walk and breathe at the same time

The procedure on how to walk and breathe at the same time has a few steps. These steps are very simple for a person to follow and achieve. Therefore, this procedure will be easy for anyone who walks for exercise.
First, a person must use his or her own legs to move forward in order to start walking. While walking, he or she must swing their arms in order to get circulation through the blood veins in order to get oxygen to the lungs which will provide energy for the heart and brain.
Next, he or she must inhale oxygen in order to breathe and get his or her lungs functioning while performing the activity. Then, he or she must exhale carbon dioxide in order to inhale more oxygen to keep the flow of circulation going as an endless cycle while walking.
Finally, he or she needs to maintain a pace that he or she is comfortable with in order to keep walking forward and not stopping. Walking with his or her own pace will make him or her perform walking and breathing at the same time because he or she does not need to worry about walking faster. In other words, he or she must walk at a pace that is just right for him or her without worrying about what other people think.
Therefore, these three steps explain how easy it is for a person to walk and breathe at the same time. So if anybody thinks that it is not possible, then he or she should read this guideline and understand that anybody can do it as long as a person puts a positive attitude toward the activity.

Explanation

I wrote this procedure based on how I conduct myself when I walk and breathe. I used these three steps because these are the steps that I think everybody uses for everyday activities, but the procedure it also used to help people who think that it is not possible to walk and breathe at the same time.

While writing this procedure, I went into detail on the three steps to illustrate how walking is conducted and how breathing is done. Basically, I used a little scientific explanation to show how it is conducted for each step.

With the description of each step, a person can get a better understanding of how the human body functions. Therefore, walking and breathing should be easy for a person who walks for exercise.

COMM 337- Chp. 1 The Journalist's Craft

Chapter 1 has some important things that I use as a professional writer. for instance, the six questions on pg. 3-4 go into a good discussion on how a reporter should use the questions. Also, the section about the lead is very important because it describes how and when a reporter should use the inverted pyramid, but also learn to use the basic news story format writing.

Finally, accuracy is very important because a reporter must spell names correctly, use numbers and names of streets, etc. Therefore, these few tips are what can help me be a professional writer and end up writing a good story for people to read and get an idea of what is happening in society.

COM 317- Code of Ethics Clinton and Obama

The negative things about the videos is that on an ad for Hillary Clinton, they used a quote from Harry S. Truman instead of using a quote in which Hillary Clinton is speaking to the people. Also, her opponent, Barack Obama's ad failed to have his voice speaking many times because he only spoke once during the entire ad about the people of the U.S.

Both ads tend to use good advocacy because both candidates sounded honest about fixing the U.S. economy and they both oppose the war in Iraq and want to bring the troops home.

Aristotle vs. Maslow- COM 317

Maslow's self- actualization is defined as making a person design his or her own lifestyle. For example, if a person purchases a product because he or she likes it, then Malsow would say that the person who bought it can develop his or her own image based on what the product is that captures his or her interests.

However, Aristotle believes that a good life is when a person develops something on his or her own and uses it to the fullest extent. Basically, if a person learns something on his or her own, then he or she should stick with it and not go out a purchase something that can ruin his or her image around others.

I think attaining self- actualization depends on a person's attitude and how they view life in general, but also decide whether or not they feel that they need to purchase a pair of shoes just to fit in with the "in crowd."

Carl Hiaasen

Carl Hiaasen believes that reporters should just cover a lot of stories and not take a side of good or evil, but just report the cold hard facts to get the truth out about the story. In other words, reporters have to be neutral while writing a story so that their emotions will not interfere with their work.

One issue Carl Hiaasen has that he has a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong because he witnessed several events such as President Kennedy's assassination and the impeachment of Richard Nixon. These two events are what made his ability to visualize about what actions or words are right and which ones are wrong stronger, but also which is the proper method to write a story for a newspaper.

Mr. Buckley Jr. contributed to the public was how to view politicians and what we, as Americans should say to view a politicians campaign for the presidency, but also view that the CIA and our government can have a few problems with getting information out to the public in order to protect national security.

No, he couldn't compete in today's multimedia world because every piece of technology it starting to become digital and information is being presented from many broadcast companies.

I found that I wouldn't not use negative opinions about a politician because it would make the government come after me and try to humiliate the rest of my life if the information presented was false, but also if it destroyed that politicians credibility.

COM 317- Obama: Plagiarism?

Facts: Obama uses words from previous speeches in which he was plagiarizing. Clinton views this as an unpolitical action to get voters to support Obama's campaign.

Ethics: Clinton tries to make Obama look bad to get voters to support her campaign. She also believes that Obama is using libel.

Principles: It involves not only libel, but slander also because Obama used the written material and spoke out to the public by following the script his writers wrote for him.

I would decide this issue as a speechwriter and as a news reporter by not using another persons work and saying that it is your own.

Compare and Contrast - Bull Run and Iraq

The Battle of Bull Run and the Iraq War are similar because both reporters have seen many soldiers wounded in battle, heard the sirens, explosions, and gun fire coming from all directions, but also, each reporter has viewed how war can be very destructive to not only people, but to civilizations.

The major difference betweeen these two stories is the timeline. Bull Run had limited resources to build guns which were revolvers, cannons, and muskets. The Iraq story has technology that is advanced for the soldiers such as grenades, tanks, jets, assault rifles, and better equipment for the soldiers to get around big obstacles. The reporter in the Civil War had to write the story out with pen and paper, while the reporter in Iraq can broadcast the war over the television.

COM 317- Point of view

1. The clearest point that I have learned in COM 317 is how the law has been unfair in the past towards people based on race and gender.

2. The confusing point is why some reporters abandon their morals and only worry about their scoop for a paper.

3. I would like to learn how to keep your morals and still get a story at the same time without having to give up one of your own morals just to get a story.

COMM 317- "Make No Law"

1. They are all terms of false libel that gives people the right to make any statement about the government. They had an effect on the freedom of speech because the freedom fries, liberty cabbage gave people the right to speak openly while the Sedition and Espionage Acts limted citizens the right to speak out in public. The freedom of the press granted major media corporations the right to tell stories in their own format, but they were also limited not to tell things that the government does not want the public to hear.

2. The specific things that the Alien and Sedition Acts prohitbited civilians to make any false statements verbally and written on paper about the government actions. The punishment today is still the same as it was back in the 18th century.

His Girl Friday Continued

Molly is being asked questions on where Earl is located and she fell out the window being seriously injured. After that incident, Walter takes charge of the situation and tries to find out from Hildy where Earl Williams is hiding.

The Morning Post will possibly have a story on Earl Williams breaking out of jail by Walter because he was told about a flood in China and he considered it not to be very newsworthy. Bruce, Hildy, and Walter are all talking at once about the story and the relationship between Hildy and Bruce. Walter hires Roy Bensinger to help with the newspaper by giving him a better pay grade than what he got from the Chicago Tribune.

Walter seems to not care about the Mother because he only cares about the paper. Walter had conversations on the phone and he raised his voice when something big happened and he demanded to know more about the story.

Williams was hiding in the desk and Walter and Hildy were placed under arrest. Walter threatens the sheriff with the media power he has for The Morning Post, then Pettibone came in to tell Walter about a story he has to report and the Mayor and everyone went to the Governor's office to tell the story.

Walter told Hildy that he was jealous when he is noble while Hildy found out that Bruce was arrested for counterfeit money. Walter tries to comfort Hildy and tells Duffy to cancel the story and let Hildy write it and that he will marry her.

His Girl Friday Continued

Walter puts the blame on something else even though he knows that his is responsible for what happened between him and Hildy. Hildy tries to get a story from a prisoner named Earl Williams by asking him how he felt when he had a gun in is hands. Card players are the bad guys by using Hildy to get Earl out of prison since they are part of the mob. Mollie Madison cares about her husband in which the card players will not bail him out of prison. Walter doesn't care how the story of Earl Williams is written just as long as he gets the story into the paper first. A jail break occured to get Earl Williams out of jail as Hildy rushes to the scene to get a big story. Reporters mention a tear bomb in which a bomb squad was called in to defuse the bomb during the jail break. The card players are also doing a report that Hildy is trying to get the big scoop.

Hildy tells Walter about the jail break so that he can possibly get a chance to publish the story. Walter mentions $450 in counterfeit. Sheriff Peter got an unknown tip on where Earl is located. Birbery erupts about the Earl Williams story in which a reporter is being offered $350 a month.

Earl Williams is threating to kill Hildy because he is tired and in fear of being executed. Earl Williams is possibly the victim in the movie. All reporters are talking at once.

COMM 317- Due Process of Law- Britney Spears

The issue of a legal due process is to treat an individuals rights respectfully and give him or her a fair chance.

Britney Spears's rights are protected by the 5150 because it allows a medical professional to help an individual that is a danger to herself and other people by which she is disabled and can be sent to a mental institution by family or friends. The California law evaluates a patient and decides whether or not that individual meets 5150 requirements.

The rights are the same because she is protected by the amendments, but also that her family members could also not have her processed into a mental hospital. Also the 5150 gives Britney a 72- hour time period for trained professionals to figure out her case.

His Girl Friday

Most journalists seem to be friendly and the boss seems to think highly of himself in the movie. All reporters try to get most stories that have an impact in the paper. The editor (Walter) is very full of himself and doesn't care what event occurred just as long as he has the story in the paper. The editors wife, Hildy, is divorced and wants Walter husband to stop being selfish. His morals are to the paper and money and not caring about his ex-wife.

Walter's values are mainly about what should be in the paper. This movie is about a man and a woman that have many differences and are having a divorce simply because the husband cares more about the newspaper than his wife. Walter is very open about his personal life and is very self-centered, but he also has some people do some dirty work for him. During lunch, Walter was acting like a jerk around his ex-wife while she is seeing another man.

Hildy is trying to dig up some information out of a group of men who play cards. She seemed to be trying to figure out a way to go to Albany without bringing her ex-husband.

COMM 317- Due Process of Law

Due process of law is an "unwritten" rule that allows a fair trial for the plaintiff and defendant. The government cannot take away a person's basic individual rights because it would violate the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.

Walter Burgwyn Jones was a judge that served in the Alabama state legislature for a year, until he became a judge in 1935 for a circuit court who eventually, in 1956, ran for President. He wrote the Alabama Pleading and Practice of Law and The Confederate Creed.

T. Eric Embry was a defense lawyer in the libel case New York Times Company versus Sullivan. He became a justice of the Supreme Court in Alabama.

The climate of public opinion in Alabama in the 1960s was very low in my opinion because the court judges were prejudice against African Americans due to the fact that the Confederacy was gone.

Jimmy Breslin

After reading Breslin's comments, mostly about Iraq, I can clearly understand why he is upset about U.S. soldiers dying in the Middle East. You find some of his comments at the Newsday Website and read about it. When I read his literature, I realize that he was speaking out to people who have loved ones fighting in Iraq in which he showed some empathy. Basically, he was trying to tell others that he cares about the soldiers and that it is time to bring them "home."

Successful Blog!

What I would like to learn for this class is how journalists publish information to the public by not harming a person or using facts that are false to gain credibility. I would also like to learn how to be a better writer and how to properly write for a newspaper or make a transcript for a radio and television station.
